Of course you could buy a canvas
prepared in any art store and you could avoid a lot of work, but if
you're a little more demanding and are looking for adequate
preparations for your needs these tips can be useful for you.
Oil painting Tip 1:
To begin buy the fabric depending on your style of painting, I mean if you have an impressionistic style with many fillings or are you going to use little oil wanting to achieve a smooth finish.... to the first case would need a fabric woven where the thickest oil will hold better, for the second case a thin cloth but without texture to help you at the finish, this is the kind of canvas that I most use.

Oil Painting Tip 2:
There are many materials to prepare the canvas I used to use a granulated glue mixed with zinc oxide, gave me good result but the problem was to calculate the amount of one or the other, it really is a little laborious, so that in these times there is nothing better than use the Gesso.

Separates the gesso into two parts, apply it to a 30 percent water merge and this will serve you well for first-hand, being more dilute the Gesso penetrate better into the fabric.
Oil Painting Tip 4:
Aapply 10 percent of water to the rest of the gesso, it will be for second or third layer, apply two layers for me personally has been successful my paintings resist either travel, while having more layers the canvas could be more prone to break.
Oil painting Tip 5:
Remember use sand paper between a layer, and layer, as I said before if you go to apply enough oil would be preferable sand only superficially, if you want a soft cloth you can sand the canvas more vigorously to ensure that none of the texture of the canvas came through.
Oil painting Tip 6:
The application of the printer can be made with a brush or spatula, try the two, but if you decided to use a spatula, It would be better apply first hand always with a brush.
Oil painting Tip 7:
If your canvas is to be folded or rolled to be in the frame, receives a blow light, you can solve the problem by applying a little water from the back (the canvas has to be streched)
I hope these tips will help you in something.
